The World Justice Project (WJP) released its annual WJP Rule of Law Index®️ 2021, based on national surveys of more than 4,200 legal practitioners and experts that measure rule of law performance in 139 countries and jurisdictions around the world.

Mr. Victor Gugushev, Partner at Gugushev & Partners Law Office, is among the legal practitioners who contributed to the research in Bulgaria. It is our hope that such reports will help identify strengths and weaknesses within each country or jurisdiction, and encourage policy choices, guide program development, and inform research to strengthen the rule of law within and across these countries and jurisdictions.

In a year dominated by the global COVID-19 pandemic, 74.2% of surveyed countries experienced declines in rule of law performance, while only 25.8% improved. The 74.2% of countries that experienced declines this year account for 84.7% of the world’s population, or approximately 6.5 billion people.

This year, according to the WJP, Bulgaria falls back two places to the current 30 place out of 31 countries in the region European Union, European Free Trade Association, and North America.
